Are notations a theoretical concept at all?

‘The following notations are defined’ doesn’t seem an idiomatic way to introduce a list of symbols for the entities in a model

I think I was sticking on ‘notation’ as a countable noun. Not all of the citations at https://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?content=following+notations+are+defined are of non-native speakers, I think.
